Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Pioneer Hi-Bred International Incorporated (Johnston, Iowa), a subsidiary of E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company (NYSE:DD) (Wilmington, Delaware), has begun processing corn at the company's new corn seed production facility in Hermiston, Oregon.
The plant is not running at full capacity, as Phase II of the project is not expected to be complete until this time next year, just in time for the new corn crop. Pioneer's contractor Bratney Companies (Boise, Idaho) is still onsite to complete Phase II, which costs an additional $10 million.
Currently, two 12-lane shucking beds are running; when Phase II is completed, four more 16-lane beds will be in operation.
The plant is located on 40 acres of land at 2212 Southeast Ninth Street in Umatilla County. The plant consists of nine pre-engineered processing buildings that were constructed by local contractor Oregon Pacific Construction (Woodburn, Oregon).
The cost of building the facility is estimated to be in the $28 million range.
