Plainfield Renewable Energy Starts Development of 37.5-Megawatt Biomass Project in Connecticut

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Plainfield Renewable Energy LLC (Norwalk, Connecticut), a subsidiary of Enova Energy Group (NYSE:ENA) (Atlanta, Georgia), and joint venture partner Decker Energy International Incorporated (Winter Park, Florida) have secured financing and are proceeding with the development of their Plainfield Renewable Energy biomass power plant project, which will be in Plainfield, Connecticut.

Financing for the $225 million plant was provided by private equity firm The Carlyle Group's (Washington, D.C.) Energy Mezzanine Opportunities team, which primarily invests in mezzanine debt in energy and power projects and companies in the U.S. and Canada.

The primary engineering, procurement and construction firm Science Applications International Corporation (NYSE:SAI) (McLean, Virginia) will construct the facility under a fixed-price, date-certain contract.

Plans involve developing a 27-acre site in Plainfield that is on a former re-use Superfund site. The 37.5-megawatt plant will utilize wood readily available from various sources, such as construction and demolition debris, recycled wood pallets, and land-clearing materials. The plant will be configured with a pre-treatment system, an Energy Products (Coeur d'Alene, Idaho) circulating fluidized bed boiler, and an Alstom gear-driven steam turbine generator.

The power from the facility will be purchased by Connecticut Light & Power (Hartford, Connecticut) under a 15-year off-take agreement.

Site preparation has been under way since September 2011, and construction of the plant is expected to be completed in December 2013 and fully commissioned soon after.
