Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). Today, owners of Metals & Minerals Industry operations in the Rocky Mountain Region are looking at $4.6 billion in potential major maintenance and capital expenditures across 67 individual projects. This includes 35 projects worth $1.4 billion scheduled to begin construction in 2005. The remaining $3.2 billion is planned in 2006 and beyond. The 2005 figures show a significant increase in Metals & Minerals Industry activity, when compared to 2004 figures. For 2004, Industrialinfo.com identified 23 projects worth $633 million that were scheduled to begin construction in 2004. Two of the larger projects currently being developed in the Rocky Mountain region include copper mining and processing projects for Phelps Dodge Mining Company and Resolution Copper Company (Phoenix, Arizona). Resolution Copper, for example, is studying a $1 billion deep underground mine and surface crushing and concentrating facilities near Superior, Arizona, which, if built, would create 1,400 construction and permanent jobs by 2010.
The Rocky Mountain Region is home to the nation's largest concentration of metal and mineral mining and processing plants. Nevada is the number one gold mining state in the U.S. and is home to some of the world's largest gold mines. Copper ore is mined in Arizona and New Mexico. The Powder River Basin of Wyoming produces over 50% of the nation's coal supply at a handful of mega-mines.
