Construction started in May 2004 on a flue gas desulfurization scrubber project at the Pleasant Prairie Power Station, owned and operated by We Energies (Milwaukee, Wisconsin) (a trade name of Wisconsin Gas and Wisconsin Electric Utilities), a primary subsidiary of Wisconsin Energy Corporation (NYSE: WEC) (Milwaukee, Wisconsin).

The 1,234-megawatt (MW) subbituminous coal-fired plant, Wisconsin’s largest generating facility, is comprised of two 617-megawatt General Electric turbine and generator sets, plus two Riley Stoker opposed-fired dry bottom boilers. The plant, which became operational in 1980, is located in Pleasant Prairie, Kenosha County, Wisconsin, about thirty miles south of Milwaukee.

Power plants are required to control air emissions to meet or exceed environmental regulations. It has been determined that a large portion of the sulfur dioxide emissions come from coal-fired boilers. Both units at the Pleasant Prairie site will be equipped with wet scrubbers. Construction completion is scheduled for mid-2006. Wet scrubber flue gas desulfurization systems are designed to inject an alkaline sorbent, consisting primarily of limestone in a spray form, into the exhaust gas system of a coal-fired boiler. The alkali reacts with the sulfur oxide gas and is accumulated in a liquid form as calcium sulfate slurry. The wet scrubber discharges an off-white wet slurry, which is then transported to landfill for disposal. The scrubbers are expected to reduce up to ninety-five percent of sulfur oxide emissions.

Washington Group International Incorporated (Boise, Idaho) is the prime contractor for the project. The company will be subcontracting out fabrication, roofing, specialty electrical, and steel work.
