Port and Industry Projects Intertwined in Southeast and Mid-Atlantic Regions

Researched by Industrial Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The Port of Miami contributes more than $17 billion annually to the South Florida economy, directly and indirectly providing 76,000 jobs in the region. Industrial Info is tracking several important projects, not only at the Port of Miami, but also at important manufacturing plants in the Southeast region and nearby Mid-Atlantic region.

Industrial Info tracked more than $3.5 billion in capital and maintenance projects in the Mid-Atlantic region in 2009, and more than 80 projects in the Southeast region worth more than $3.7 billion.

Industry and ports in the area are inextricably intertwined, as many of the regions' plants are reliant on raw materials and goods obtained through the ports. The Port of Morehead City in North Carolina is important for the Mid-Atlantic region, particularly the rubber industry, as the port ranks second behind the Port of New Orleans for rubber imports. The port had a scare on January 12, when several drums containing the powerful explosive PETN (Pentaerythritol Tetranitrate) were accidentally punctured by a forklift operator. The port was evacuated and shut down, but reopened shortly after the incident as no injuries or environmental damage occurred.

Of the 68 projects Industrial Info tracked in the Mid-Atlantic region in 2009, many were in the early development stages toward the end of 2009, and many of these were projected to kick off in 2010 and 2011. Examples of plants with future confirmed kickoffs or ongoing capital and maintenance activity in the Mid-Atlantic region include American National Rubber (Ceredo, West Virginia), Honeywell Safety Products (Morristown, New Jersey) and the Trelleborg Group (Trelleborg, Sweden).

There are two big projects kicking off in the first quarter of 2010 in the Port of Miami totaling more than $18 million. A former project manager stated they "are recouping from inspections" performed in late December 2009.
