Portland General Electric Completes 175-Megawatt Expansion Project at Biglow Canyon

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Portland General Electric Company (NYSE:POR) (PGE) (Portland, Oregon) has completed construction of the estimated $295 million, 175-megawatt (MW) expansion project at the Biglow Canyon Wind Energy Project.

Construction for the third phase of the project began in the summer of 2009 and was completed this summer. Portland General Electric began full commercial operation of the project in late September. The project consisted of adding 76 Siemens Power Generation SWT-2.3-93 model wind turbine generators, of 2.3 MW each, to the existing facility; 24 of the new wind turbines were installed before the end of July, while the other 52 were still being constructed.

The first phase of the project was completed in late 2007, totaling 125 MW; the second phase began commercial operation in the later part of the summer of 2009, generating up to 150 MW. Now that the third phase of Biglow Canyon is completed and fully operational, the project is one of the largest windfarms in the Pacific Northwest. It is built on a 25,000-acre site and features a total of 217 wind turbines with a combined nameplate capacity of 450 MW, which can produce enough renewable energy to power more than 125,000 homes.

The estimated total cost of the Biglow Canyon Project is nearly $1 billion. Biglow will help PGE fulfill Oregon's renewable energy standard, which requires investor-owned utilities to meet their customers' demand with renewable energy, 15% by 2015 and 25% by 2025.

D.H. Blattner & Sons Incorporated (Avon, Minnesota) provided the turnkey engineering, procurement and construction services throughout the duration of both the second and third phases of the project.
