Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Since its founding in 2009, Apex Clean Energy (Charlottesville, Virginia) has grown into one of the most ambitious medium-scale renewable energy companies in the U.S. Industrial Info is tracking more than 65 active projects from the company, scattered across the U.S. Although not all of these projects will make it to construction, about $5.8 billion worth of them have been classified by Industrial Info as having a medium or high probability (70-99%) of moving forward as planned. Texas leads the way in regard to these investments, thanks in part to a project outside of Apex's usual power-generation scope.
Among the largest Apex projects presently under construction in Texas is a grassroot solar and battery energy storage system (BESS) in San Angelo. Construction on the solar farm started first, kicking off early last year. Construction of the BESS unit is just starting, although both the solar unit and BESS are expected to be completed by the end of this year. The solar unit will provide 195 megawatts (MW) of energy, while the BESS will provide 103 MW when the sun isn't shining. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Power Project Database can learn more by viewing the project reports on the solar farm and BESS.
Two other Apex projects are set to kick off this year in Texas: a 133-MW solar energy center in Falls County that is expected to be completed in late 2025 and the 103-MW Great Kiskadee BESS in Hidalgo, on the Texas-Mexico border near Brownsville. For the Great Kiskadee project, Apex earlier this year entered a joint venture with South Korea's SK Gas (Gyeonggi-do) for the project's construction, which will be 60% funded by SK and 40% funded by Apex, although Apex will oversee the project's construction and operations. According to a press release, the joint venture is likely to look for another project of similar size and duration. While Apex has several other Texas projects, one outside of its traditional purview garners mention. In 2022, Apex signed a memorandum of understanding with the Port of Corpus Christi Authority and two other companies to pursue development of a gigawatt-scale green hydrogen plant in Corpus Christi. The project isn't too far out of Apex's domain as green hydrogen is created from electrolysis using renewable energy. At the time, Apex Chief Executive Mark Goodwin said the four partners would leverage the "highest quality wind and solar resources in Texas" to help decarbonize the emissions-heavy Texas Gulf Coast. The project remains in the early stages, but Apex and the others could break ground in the coming years should the venture yield results. Of course, not all Apex projects are in Texas. Expected to be completed later this year is the Springwater solar plant in West Jefferson, Ohio. The project kicked off late last year and was expected to take about a year to complete. The facility will use more than 386,000 solar panels to provide 155 MW of power. Not all Apex projects are for solar or BESS units either. Construction of Apex's Downeast wind project in Washington County, Maine, is currently wrapping up. Reed & Reed Incorporated (Woolwich, Maine) has provided engineering, procurement and construction services on the project, which entailed situating 30 Vestas turbines, each rated at 4.2 MW, to provide 126 MW of power. One of Apex's largest active wind projects is set to begin construction later this year. The Discovery Windfarm in McLean County, North Dakota, will boast between 174 and 200 turbines rated at 2 MW or higher to achieve combined generation of about 400 MW. Should the project start as planned, it could be online by the second half of next year. Subscribers can learn more by viewing the project report.
