Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Potrero Hills Energy Producers LLC (Suisun City, California), a joint venture partnership between DTE Energy Company (NYSE:DTE) (Detroit, Michigan) and Pacolet Milliken Enterprises Incorporated (Greenville, South Carolina), has completed construction of an 8-megawatt (MW) landfill gas-to-energy facility in Suisun City, California and is now generating enough renewable energy to power 10,000 homes.
The estimated $20 million-plus project has been under way since mid-2015, and construction was completed in 12 months. The 320-acre Potrero Hills Landfill's methane gas is collected and treated to remove sulfur content then fed into five new 1.5 mega-watt G3520C Caterpillar engines.
The plant then delivers renewable energy to the Pacific Gas & Electric (NYSE:PCG) (San Francisco, California) grid under a long-term power purchase agreement. The project will also help the state of California meet its renewable energy goals.
LFG Technologies (Kalamazoo, Michigan) was selected as the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor for the project, and Waste Connections Incorporated (NYSE: WCN) (The Woodlands, Texas) will operate the plant.
The facility sits on a 4-acre site next to the Potrero Hill landfill some four miles east of Fairfield, California in Solano County. DTE Biomass also has a 23-megawatt landfill gas-to-energy facility at the Sunshine Canyon landfill, which is located in Sylmar, California, and a 45-megawatt renewable district energy facility in Stockton, California, all adding renewable generation capacity to California over the past two years.
