Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Like other states in the Great Lakes region, Ohio has a strong industrial manufacturing presence. As home to a portion of the Utica Shale, natural gas is easily accessible, resulting in the construction of gas-fired power plants, something that has ebbed in the U.S. in recent years. Industrial Info is tracking $13.5 billion in industrial projects that are under construction in Ohio, including more than $5.6 billion in the Industrial Manufacturing Industry and $3.4 billion in the Power Industry.

According to David Pickering, Industrial Info's vice president of research for the Industrial Manufacturing Industry, data center projects have become more numerous in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic as Americans have stepped up their online shopping, learning and socializing. For related information, see July 15, 2021, article - IIR Webinar Discusses North American Industrial Manufacturing 'Hotspot Sectors'.

Ohio has been a beneficiary of this data center project activity, with some of the biggest names in tech, including Facebook Incorporated (NASDAQ:FB) (Menlo Park, California) and Amazon.com Incorporated (NASDAQ:AMZN) (Seattle, Washington), underway with facilities there. As is typical for data center activity, Amazon and Facebook's facilities are sprouting up near the same location: in this case, New Albany, Ohio, on the northeastern outskirts of Columbus.

According to local news media, Facebook eventually will plow more than $1 billion into its data center campus in New Albany. Facebook began operations of the first two buildings of the campus, each 450,000 square feet, in early 2020, shortly after which the company kicked off construction of a third building of similar size, which is expected to be completed in the fourth quarter of this year. Turner Construction Company (New York, New York) is the general contractor on the project. Plans for a fourth and fifth building already have been announced.

Amazon was one of the first to enter the New Albany data center scene when it announced it had chosen the area for a facility in 2014. The company now is under way with a fourth building on the campus, which will have 170,000 square feet. Construction kicked off late last year and is expected to wrap up by the end of this year. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

Other companies with data center projects under way in New Albany include Google parent company Alphabet Incorporated (NASDAQ:GOOGL) (Mountain View, California). Click here for the project report.

Two of the largest projects under construction in Ohio are for natural gas-fired power plants. In 2019, Apex Power LLC (Mooresville, Indiana) kicked off construction of its 1,875-megawatt (MW) Guernsey Power Station in Byesville, with Gemma Power Systems LLC (Glastonbury, Connecticut) providing engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) services. The facility will use General Electric (NYSE:GE) (Boston, Massachusetts) equipment and is expected to be completed in late 2022. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Power Project Database can click here for the project report.

The other gas-fired power project, which is nearing completion, is Advanced Power AG's (Zug, Switzerland) South Field Energy Center in Wellsville, about 45 miles northwest of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Upon completion, the facility will generate 1,100 MW. Bechtel Corporation (Reston, Virginia) is providing EPC services. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

The Metals & Minerals Industry also makes a strong showing in the state, including the expansion of a flat-rolled steel minimill in Delta. Plant owner BlueScope Steel Limited (Kansas City, Missouri) announced the project in the summer of 2019, and construction began later that year. While the project isn't set for completion until next year, in a conference call, BlueScope Chief Executive Officer Mark Vassella said the project couldn't be finished fast enough as U.S. steel prices have hit record highs this year. "Right now, I can't get the North Star project done quick enough, quite frankly, and the team out there are running at 1,000 miles an hour to bring it to market," he said in February. Surging steel prices worldwide, especially in North America, underscore the importance of the project, according to Vassella. The U.S. pet food has been booming recently, and Nestle SA subsidiary Nestle Purina PetCare Company (Saint Joseph, Missouri) has become one of the largest project investors in the U.S. Food & Beverage Industry. The company is making a home in Williamsburg, Ohio, east of Cincinnati, through the construction of a grassroot pet food manufacturing plant. Construction kicked off late last year and is expected to be completed in 2023. According to a company press release, "The Williamsburg Township location will join Purina's network of 21 existing manufacturing locations across the United States and be the company's first new factory built from the ground up since 1975. ... Purina's new operations will be designed with sustainability at the forefront, including a commitment to send zero waste for disposal, and production processes designed to recover and reuse heat and water."
