Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--According to Industrial Info's North American Industrial Project Database, projects totaling more than $9.7 billion are set to kick off in the U.S. West Coast region from April through June of this year. The region includes the states of California, Oregon, Washington, Alaska and Hawaii.

California, with more than $5 billion in planned project starts, leads the region in terms of the value of planned projects, and as with most areas of the U.S., the Power Industry leads other industrial sectors in both the value and number of planned projects. While not all of these projects will kick off during the quarter, the number represents a fairly solid base for industrial activity. In 2Q12, approximately $8 billion in projects began construction in the region.

In addition to some of the large-scale solar photovoltaic projects planned in California, one the larger planned Power Industry projects in the state is repowering Unit 3 of the Scattergood Generating Station in southern Los Angeles. The plant is owned by the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power and will have a generating capacity of approximately 530 megawatts after the construction of two natural gas-fired combined-cycle units. The project is expected to be completed in 2016.

Further south, in Carlsbad, California, construction of a $922 million grassroot seawater desalination plant is planned to begin during the quarter. Upon completion in late 2015/early 2016, the plant will produce approximately 50 million gallons per day of drinkable water from 100 million gallons of seawater using a reverse osmosis filtering process. The plant is owned by Poseidon Resources Corporation (Stamford, Connecticut). Kiewit Shea Desalination (Carlsbad), a joint venture of Kiewit Infrastructure West Company and J.F. Shea Company Incorporated, is acting as EPC firm on the project.

Detailed information on these and other projects across the North America and the world is available in Industrial Info's Global Industrial Project Database.
