PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI), Freeport-McMoRan's Indonesian subsidiary, is planning to begin construction on a 2 million-ton-per-year copper smelter in mid-2020. PTFI is fulfilling its commitment, made last year to the Indonesian government, to build a smelter within five years.

PTFI's Grasberg Mine, one of the world's largest copper and gold mines, recently began extraction from its underground operations. Operators at the Grasberg Mine intend to request additional mineral allocations in the mine's export permit, after showing progress in developing their smelter.
