Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Boosted by abundant mineral resources and government incentives, Quebec is becoming a major Canadian destination for power and mining projects. Industrial Info is tracking $736 million in active and unconfirmed projects that are set to kick off in the Canadian province in the fourth quarter of 2014, with almost all attributed to the Metals & Minerals, Power and Pharmaceutical industries.
Not surprisingly, the single largest project set to kick off construction in Quebec in the fourth quarter comes from the Metals & Minerals Industry, which accounts for more than 40% of the TIV: Argex Titanium Incorporated's (Montreal, Quebec) $247.6 million construction of a titanium dioxide (TiO2) manufacturing plant in Salaberry-De-Valleyfield. The company plans to use its hydrometallurgical processing technology to produce 50,000 tons per year of TiO2 from ilmenite ore tailings. WSP Global Incorporated (Montreal) is performing design-engineering services.

Although the Power Industry has the second-largest TIV of any industry, it only accounts for two projects, both windfarms: EDF EN Canada Incorporated's (Montreal) $175 million construction of the Mont Rothery Windfarm in Murdochville, and Boralex Incorporated's (Montreal) $50 million construction of the La Cote de Beaupre Windfarm in Beaupre. The Mont Rothery Windfarm is expected to feature 37 Senvion wind turbine generators of 2 megawatts (MW) each, for a total capacity of 74 MW. Senvion Canada Incorporated (Montreal) is serving as technology provider. EDF EN Canada is a subsidiary of Electricite de France S.A. (Paris, France).

The La Cote de Beaupre Windfarm is expected to feature 11 Enercon wind turbine generators of 2.3 MW each, for a total capacity of about 25 MW. Among Canadian provinces, Quebec ranks second only to Ontario in installed wind power, with about 2,400 MW.

The Pharmaceutical & Biotech Industry boasts the third-largest TIV and the third-largest project: Green Cross Corporation's (Yongin, South Korea) $170 million construction of a biotherapeutics blood plasma fractionation plant in Montreal. The facilities will produce up to 1 million liters per year of fractionated plasma for various companies, including Hema-Quebec (Quebec City, Quebec). Verreault Incorporated (Montreal) is performing construction management services.

Projects from all other industries that are set to begin construction in Quebec in the fourth quarter total $27 million in investment value.
More than half of the region's TIV--about $318 million--is related to projects that are now in the planning stages, where plenty of factors could increase, decrease or eliminate the expected spending. The region also has $286 million worth of projects in the engineering stages, while almost $32 million worth already have kicked off the first stage of construction and will kick off the second in the fourth quarter.
