Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Renewables-focused investment manager Quinbrook Infrastructure Partners (New York, New York) notched up a big win last week when its Gemini Solar Plant in Moapa, Nevada, about 50 miles northeast of downtown Las Vegas, began generating energy. Gemini, which was built in collaboration with Primergy Solar (Oakland, California), is part of more than $15.5 billion worth of active and proposed projects across the U.S. from Quinbrook tracked by Industrial Info, about $11.3 billion of which is attributed to solar and battery energy-storage system (BESS) projects.

The Gemini project comprises a $726 million solar plant, which is designed to generate 440 megawatts (MW) from about 1.15 million photovoltaic (PV) panels provided by SunPower Corporation (NASDAQ:SPWR) (San Jose, California), and a $260 million BESS unit with a 380-MW capacity. Kiewit Corporation (Lenexa, Kansas) performed engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) services.

Quinbrook and Primergy also are considering proposed expansions to Gemini. If approved, second-phase and third-phase developments each could add 250 MW of capacity, with construction kicking off as early as the spring of 2025 and 2027, respectively. Both companies are seeking permits for Phase II and are in the early stages for siting Phase III. Subscribers can read detailed reports on the proposed Phase II and Phase III.
Earlier this year, Quinbrook and Primergy secured debt financing for its $588 million Ash Creek Solar Plant in Penelope, Texas, in the state's Hill Country. The companies also signed a long-term power purchase agreement with Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) (Redmond, Washington) for the full 408 MW generated by the plant. Quinbrook and Primergy are weighing a proposed, 306-MW BESS unit at Ash Creek, which, if approved, could begin construction as early as third-quarter 2025.

Quinbrook also is involved in the development of data centers across the U.S., with about $4 billion worth of projects under development. They include a $3 billion data center in Temple, Texas, from Quinbrook subsidiary Rowan Digital Infrastructure (Houston, Texas), which began construction in the spring of 2022 and is set to wrap up in the first quarter of 2025. A proposed expansion that would more than double capacity is under consideration. Subscribers can read detailed project reports on the data center and its proposed expansion.
"We originally established Rowan to address the new capacity demands from data center operators for optimal host sites that could keep up with hyperbolic growth in data storage yet access low-cost renewable power," said David Scaysbrook, co-founder and managing partner of Quinbrook, in a press release about the Temple project. "Quinbrook's 'doubling down' on our Rowan strategy is reflective of the keen interest we have received from customers to date and underscores the strength of our conviction to directly address the sustainability challenges faced in the digital age."
Rowan also is proposing the four-phase Percheron Data Center campus in Boardman, Oregon, which would comprise four buildings and 1.125 million square feet of space to bolster regional cloud data services. "This site was deliberately chosen for our data center project because it has never and will never be used for farming, due to extremely poor soil quality and lack of irrigation," Rowan said in a statement.
