Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--In a recent market report from the American Clean Power Association (ACP) (Washington, D.C.), the trade group said the number of U.S. clean energy installations, including solar, wind and energy storage, rose in the just-passed first quarter, as did the amount of power purchase agreements (PPAs) for clean energy.

The ACP's Clean Power Quarterly Market Report | Q1 2024 noted utility-scale solar, wind and storage added a combined 5,585 megawatts (MW) of new capacity in the first quarter, up 28% compared to installations in the same period in 2023. The addition of 4,557 MW of utility-scale solar allowed the U.S. to surpass 100 gigawatts (GW) of installed capacity.

Industrial Info is tracking more than $40 billion worth of solar-generation projects under construction in the U.S., about one-third of which is in Texas. The project activity in the Lone Star State includes Ørsted A/S' (Fredericia, Denmark) Mockingbird solar farm near Paris, Texas, about 100 miles northwest of Dallas. Construction of the 471-MW solar farm, which is designed to utilize photovoltaic (PV) solar panels, is expected to wrap up later this year. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Power Project Database can click here to read a detailed project report.

Mockingbird's power generation is fully contracted through several PPAs, including a 15-year, 80-MW PPA with Bloomberg LP (New York, New York), as well as with Covestro AG (Leverkusen, Germany) and DSM (Heerlen, Netherlands), among others.

Solar farms also are colocated with energy-storage facilities. Industrial Info is tracking the construction of National Grid plc's (NYSE:NGG) (London, England) $300 million Blevins solar-plus-storage project in Lott, Texas, about 100 miles south of Dallas. The 270-MW solar plant and an accompanying 180-MW battery-energy storage system (BESS) unit are expected to reach operations in 2025. Late last year, National Grid announced PPAs for the project that will contract its full power, supplying two offtakers with 145 MW and the remaining 125 MW, respectively. Subscribers can click here for more information on the project.

Although Texas leads in the total investment value of solar-generation projects under construction, the ACP said nearly 40% of the newly installed capacity came online in Florida. The latter is home to $1.4 billion in projects under construction, with nearly all of the activity attributed to NextEra Energy Incorporated's (NYSE:NEE) (Juno Beach, Florida) utility in Florida.

All of Florida's projects have a capacity of less than 75 MW, which includes two projects expected to wrap up this quarter: the Sambucus Solar Energy Center in Manatee County and the Pecan Tree Solar Energy Center in DeFuniak Springs. The latter will utilize 200,000 PV solar panels from First Solar Incorporated (NASDAQ:FSLR) (Tempe, Arizona). Subscribers can read reports on the Sambucus and Pecan Tree projects.

"Crossing the 100 GW milestone for solar, launching groundbreaking projects like South Fork Wind, and a record-setting pace of new contracts for clean energy are clear indicators of the public's demand to bolster the grid with domestic, reliable and affordable clean energy," said John Hensley, vice president of markets and policy analysis for the ACP, in a press release reporting a summary of findings.

Ørsted A/S and utility company Eversource Energy (NYSE:ES) (Hartford, Connecticut) started operations in March at the 132-MW South Fork Windfarm off the coast of New York, marking the first operational commercial-scale offshore windfarm in the U.S. Industrial Info recently reported a positive outlook for the development of offshore wind; see March 22, 2024, article - U.S. Offshore Wind Seeing Some Momentum.

The ACP also said onshore wind capacity increased 37% year-over-year to 13.7 GW, noting "Wyoming and New Mexico are leading the charge for the technology, supplanting long-time market leader Texas."

The largest project being tracked by Industrial Info is Pattern Energy's (San Francisco, California) SunZia windfarm, under construction in three counties in New Mexico, which is designed to generate more than 3,000 MW of wind power that will be transported to energy markets in the western U.S. via the related SunZia transmission line. The wind project has an agreement in place to provide the Clean Power Alliance (CPA) (Los Angeles, California) with 575 MW of power for a period of 15 years. The CPA is an aggregator that provides power to 30 municipalities in Southern California. Subscribers can read about the SunZia wind project, which is expected to begin operating in 2026--when the transmission line also is expected to be in place.

Other onshore wind projects include Invenergy's (Chicago, Illinois) Rock Wind Energy Center near Arlington, Wyoming, about 90 miles northeast of Cheyenne. Phase I, which is expected to be completed around the end of the year, is designed to supply 190.8 MW of power, while the second phase will add an additional 398 MW of generation. The facility will utilize wind turbines provided by General Electric (NYSE:GE) (Boston, Massachusetts). Subscribers can learn more by viewing the Phase I and Phase II project reports.
