Summary
Developer Ioneer said it was cleared to proceed with its Nevada project after surviving a legal challenge from environmental advocates.Moving On
The developers of the Rhyolite Ridge lithium mining facility said Tuesday they survived a court challenge from the environmental community and can now move forward. The Center for Biological Diversity, Western Shoshone Defense Project and Green Basin Resource Watch all challenged the Rhyolite Ridge project in court. They argued that federal regulators failed to ensure the protected status of Tiehm's buckwheat, an endangered wildflower, and the Fish Lake Valley tui chub, a fish.
The U.S. District Court for the District of Nevada ruled the federal U.S. Department of the Interior took an adequate look at the impacts on the ecosystem and found there would be little degradation.
"For more than six years, we have worked closely with state, federal and tribal representatives, as well as the Fish Lake Valley community, to responsibly develop our Rhyolite Ridge Lithium-Boron Project," Australia-based Ioneer Limited said in a statement. "This favorable outcome is a significant milestone and allows us to continue advancing our work in delivering lithium and boron for the United States."
The company is proposing a $640 million facility in Nevada that would boast net production of 20 million tons of material per day. An on-site production plant would yield more than 20,600 tons per year of lithium carbonate, which could yield enough lithium for 370,000 electric vehicle (EV) batteries.

Ioneer believes Rhyolite Ridge holds about 360 million tons of net deposits, including 3.4 million tons of lithium carbon equivalent and 14.1 million tons of boric acid equivalent. Collectively, that estimate is some 145% greater than the previous estimate from 2020.
The U.S. Bureau of Land Management completed its review of the project in late 2024, spelling out the specifics for a facility that would include everything from the mine itself to water-storage facilities, disturbing about 2,200 acres of federally administrated land.
By the Numbers
- 2,200 acres of federally-administrated land to be disturbed
- 3.4 million tons of lithium carbon equivalent at Rhyolite Ridge
Reshoring Lithium
The U.S. government, as part of a broad-based effort to reshore parts of the economy, is working to build up a domestic sector for lithium and lithium-ion batteries with incentives. Tariffs, meanwhile, are in place for some critical materials, leaving Ioneer upbeat about its prospects in Nevada.Further progress could be stalled, however, by the volatility in the price of lithium, which could leave some investors on standby. Largely insulated from the war in the Middle East, prices nevertheless are up nearly 120% so far this year.
Apart from domestic mining operations, some developers are looking at recycling to find the critical minerals needed for modern technology. Once disposed, disassembled and shredded, recyclers can draw on the so-called black mass for sources of lithium, cobalt, manganese and other critical minerals. These materials can be extracted from the black mass and reused for new batteries or other applications.
Li-Cycle is one of the largest battery recyclers in North America, with operations in Toronto and New York. Its facility in Rochester, New York, could process as much as 35,000 tons of black mass per year for repurposing. Subscribers learn more from a detailed project report.
Key Takeaways
- Ioneer survives environmental challenge.
- U.S is working largely from scratch on lithium operations.
