Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The market for renewable natural gas (RNG) is driving activity in the U.S. Alternative Fuel Industry. RNG demand is expected to grow substantially in the coming years, according to various analysts, some of whom are predicting global production could more than double by 2030. Industrial Info is tracking more than $2 billion worth of capital-spending projects in the U.S. Alternative Fuel Industry that are set to kick off in third-quarter 2025, the bulk of which are for RNG developments.

In April, a bipartisan group of U.S. senators and representatives reintroduced legislation to create a $1-per-gallon tax credit for renewable natural gas (RNG) sold in the U.S. as transportation fuel. Dubbed the Renewable Natural Gas Incentive Act of 2025, it would apply to RNG used for fuel in motor vehicles, motorboats or aviation that is sold or used between December 31, 2025, and December 31, 2035. The bill was introduced in the Senate by Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC) and referred to the Committee on Finance, where it currently stands.

Clean Energy Fuels Corporation (Newport Beach, California), a supplier of alternative fuels, is at work on two projects in Quitman, Georgia, to transform methane from cow manure into pipeline-quality RNG. At the Brooksco Dairy Farm and Southbrook Dairy Farm, located about 10 miles apart, the company will use a covered, anaerobic lagoon (called a "lagoon digester") to break down the organic waste via bacteria and produce the biogas. Both projects currently are expected to wrap up in the fourth quarter of 2026.

Andrew Littlefair, the chief executive officer of Clean Energy Fuels, said in a recent quarterly earnings-related conference call that his company's RNG practices are protecting it from the effects of U.S. President Donald Trump's tariff policies: "Our network of fueling stations are located in the U.S. and Canada, and all of our RNG production facilities are located in the U.S. The vast majority of equipment and materials for our construction projects has already been procured. In fact, earlier this year, we moved compressors equipment from inventory in Canada to our facility in Wyoming as a precaution. Unlike other renewable-energy supply chains, our RNG is produced, transported and delivered to customers here in the U.S."

Clean Energy Fuels also announced plans last year to boost its liquefied natural gas (LNG) capacity by 50%. For more information, see June 13, 2024, article - New LNG Train to Support Shippers on U.S. West Coast.

3 Rivers Energy Partners (Constantine, Michigan) also plans to process organic waste into pipeline-grade RNG at an RNG plant in White Castle, Louisiana, which will feature an anaerobic digester tank system, gas upgrader and purification system, among other components. The company already is considering a Phase II extension of the facility, which could kick off before the end of the year. Subscribers can read detailed reports on Phase I and the proposed Phase II.

Other RNG projects nearing construction include Air Liquide S.A.'s (Paris, France) Center Township RNG Plant in Aliquippa, Pennsylvania, which will process cow manure from partnering farmers in the area, and GreenGasUSA LLC's (Charleston, South Carolina) RNG plant in Hyrum, Utah, which will process biogas collected from a nearby beef-processing plant's wastewater. Subscribers can read detailed reports on the Center Township and Hyrum projects.
