Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--When semiconductor fabrication plants, known as fabs, are built, they're generally very large projects. Granted up to $6.1 billion in funding from the Biden-era CHIPS and Science Act, Micron Technology Incorporated (NASDAQ:MU) (Boise, Idaho) is putting part of the funds to work in Idaho, where the company is constructing a $25 billion semiconductor fab. While the project is the largest development underway in Idaho, and indeed one of the largest investments in the state's history, Idaho's remaining $2.8 billion in projects that are under construction and being tracked by Industrial Info represent a broad range of industrial sectors, with the dairy sector playing a prominent role.

The U.S. Department of Commerce announced the award to Micron in December of last year, after Micron had already begun expansion of its fab in Boise. The funding represents only a portion of the investment Micron intends to make at facilities in New York and Idaho. General contractor Exyte US Incorporated (Boise) and several subcontractors are adding more than 1 million square feet of buildings to the site that will house a new clean room, water treatment facility, gas plant, administrative offices, central utilities and more. The project is expected to be completed in the summer of 2026. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Industrial Manufacturing Project Database can learn more by viewing the project report.

The project is having a knock-on effect for other development in the Boise area. Air Liquide SA (Paris, France), for example, late last year started construction on a plant in Boise to manufacture ultra-pure nitrogen and other gases that will support Micron's expansion. Air Liquide states this newest production unit is 5% more efficient than previous-generation plants and that the electricity for the facility is targeted to be entirely from renewable energy within the next five years. One of the potential end-markets for Micron's new chips, a data center, is being built in nearby Kuna by Facebook parent Meta Platforms Incorporated (NASDAQ:META) (Menlo Park, California), which is underway with two of four planned phases of construction. These initial phases entail adding an administration building and the first two data halls. Subscribers can learn more by viewing the related project reports.

A substantial portion of Idaho's remaining project spending comes for the dairy sector, which accounts for nearly $800 million worth of projects under construction. One such project comes from one of the nation's most popular and bestselling yogurt makers, Chobani LLC (Norwich, New York), which manufactures a wide range of flavored Greek yogurts, yogurt beverages and other products. Earlier this year, Chobani launched an expansion of its 1 million-square-foot plant in Twin Falls that will add approximately 500,000 feet of building space and boost production capacity by about 50%. The site manufactures yogurt, oat milk and coffee creamers. According to Dairy Herd Management, the Twin Falls site already is hailed as the world's largest yogurt factory. Hamdi Ulukaya, chief executive officer of Chobani, said of the project's use of local resources, "Basically, we're going to double our milk usage and then we're going to be tripling it. Right now, we're getting about 4 million pounds of milk a day, this will get us to over 10 million pounds per day." Once the expansion is completed, the plant will have 24 production lines. Another Idaho dairy project represents $200 million in spending and a new direction for Idaho Milk Products Incorporated (Jerome, Idaho), which is branching out into the ice cream business with an expansion at its Jerome campus. The 183,000-square-foot addition will be used to produce 11 million gallons per year of ice cream and also will feature powder blending capabilities, which entails blending dairy powders such as milk powders, whey protein and lactose into various blends that can be used for a variety of purposes such as food manufacturing, beverage production and nutritional supplements. General contractor Shambaugh & Son LP (Fort Wayne, Indiana) began construction late last year and is expected to completed with the project in the first half of next year. Subscribers can click here to learn more about the project.

Idaho ranked third in milk production in the U.S. in 2023, behind California and Wisconsin and narrowly edging out Texas, which took fourth place.
