Rocky Mountain Region Hosts $14 Billion in New Industrial Plant Construction

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). Construction is flourishing in the Rocky Mountain Region with more than 50 new industrial facilities currently underway. With a vast total investment value (TIV) of nearly $14 billion currently being spent to build these new plants, a significant number of new hires will be needed in the region and that need could reach 5,000. The completion dates for these new locations are varied, with 60% scheduled to be complete as soon as this summer and another 30% proposed to be operational in mid 2008. The remainder of the new plants have completion dates throughout 2010.

The state investing the majority of the $14 billion is New Mexico with an estimated $5 billion. When looking at the region’s growth from a different angle, the Rocky Mountain state proposed to gain the highest number of new employees when the plants become operational is Utah. New Mexico is forecasted to gain an estimated 950 jobs and Utah could possibly double that number with 1,900. With $2 billion in new plant construction currently in progress in Arizona, it is anticipated that over 1,000 new employees could be added to this area of the region.

The Power and Industrial Manufacturing sectors are currently investing the most for new facilities in the Rocky Mountains. Each of the two industry groups is in the process of spending over $3.5 billion on over 27 industrial plant locations currently under construction. Of that combined total, 15 are new power plants and the remaining 12 are for some facet of Industrial Manufacturing.

In the power sector, a massive expenditure of $1 billion is being invested for the construction of the 750-megawatt Two Elks Coal Unit 2 addition to be located in Wright, Wyoming. Two Elk Generation Partners Limited (Greenwood Village, Colorado) recently broke ground on the plant, which is scheduled to be completed by 2010. The Industrial Manufacturing Industry is also doing some hefty spending in the region, with a major $2 billion advanced hydro-testing facility being constructed in Los Alamos, New Mexico for the Los Alamos National Laboratory, set to finish in early 2008.

The Oil and Gas Transmission Industry, with 369 operational plants, is the industry group leader within the region. Metals and Minerals and Food and Beverage are tied for with the second most number of operational plants with 331.
