Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The Rocky Mountains market region is set to see more than $3 billion in project starts in the Power Industry. The region includes Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, New Mexico, Nevada, Utah and Wyoming. New Mexico, with more than $1.6 billion of planned projects, leads in terms of project value. Among the largest projects planned to kick off in the region in the upcoming quarter is Xcel Energy Incorporated's (NASDAQ:XEL) (Minneapolis, Minnesota) Sagamore wind project near Portales, New Mexico. The 522-megawatt (MW) windfarm will feature 261 2-MW wind turbines. The project is expected to take about a year to complete. Wanzek Construction Incorporated (Coral Gables, Florida) is providing engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) on the project, which has an estimated total investment value (TIV) of $865 million. Also in New Mexico, Iberdrola SA (Bilbao, Spain) plans to begin construction on 166-MW windfarm near Estancia, about 50 miles southeast of Albuquerque. Iberdrola's La Joya Windfarm will feature 83 Vestas 2-MW wind turbines. Solar power also features in the region's project activity. In Denver, Colorado, Golden Concord Holdings Limited (Hong Kong) plans to begin construction on its 42.5-MW Pioneer South solar project. The facility will be constructed on a 422-acre site and will use an estimated 321,400 photovoltaic solar modules. The facility will feature a 34.5-kilowatt underground collector system to tie in to the substation. Construction is expected to begin soon and take about a year to complete. While grassroot coal-fired construction has basically stopped in the U.S., maintenance and upgrade projects are still seen. In Arizona, Fortis Incorporated (TSX:FTS) (St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador) will begin an upgrade of the 418-MW coal-fired Unit 3 boiler at a power plant in Springerville. The project entails replacing the reheat and superheat sections of the boiler as well as major pressure components. TEI Construction Services (Magnolia, Texas) is providing EPC.
