Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The Industrial Manufacturing Industry's plastic & rubber products sector shows a strong presence in the U.S., boasting $24 billion in active projects, nearly $13 billion of which are presently under construction. While Industrial Info considers the plastic & rubber sector as part of the manufacturing industry, the products made at these plants cover a range of industries, including automotive, construction and more.
Automotive-related projects underway include construction of Hankook Tire and Technology Company Limited's $1.6 billion expansion of its tire plant in Clarksville, Tennessee, which is expected to wrap up around the end of the year. The project entails adding an 830,000-square-foot building to the 1.1 million-square-foot facility, which has been producing about 5.5 million tires annually since 2017; new equipment will boost production to 11 million tires annually--doubling Hankook's production of passenger car and light truck tires in the U.S. Production is expected to begin next year. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Industrial Manufacturing Project Database can click here for more information on the project.
Another tire-related project is attributed to Bridgestone Corporation (Tokyo, Japan) and is aimed at producing tires for larger vehicles. The $550 million expansion of its plant in Morrison, Tennessee, 120 miles southeast of Clarksville, entails an 850,000-square-foot addition in order to support further production of radial and bus tires it produces. Those tires will be equipped with radio frequency identification (RFID) tags that enable more efficient asset management and optimization of fleets' investments in tires, including retreading. Bridgestone also will invest in "AI [artificial intelligence] control technology that increases productivity and the application of knowledge and data in a digital manufacturing environment." Other large projects support the production of separator films for lithium-ion batteries, which prevent direct contact between a battery's anode and cathode, while allowing free passage of lithium ions through a porous membrane. They are generally made from substances including polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polyethylene (PE), polypropylene and others.
Grassroot construction on Microporous LLC's (Piney Flats, Tennessee) $800 million lithium-ion battery separators plant in Danville, Virginia, began late last year and is expected to wrap up around the end of 2026. The project involves a 500,000-square-foot building, while a potential expansion could kick off in 2027, to produce PE separators for electric vehicles (EVs). Subscribers can read more information on the grassroot and expansion projects
Among the construction-related projects set to wrap up in the second half of 2026 are Troy Acoustics' (Brunswick, Georgia) grassroot manufacturing plant in Thomasville, Georgia for the production of sound wall system components used in highway noise barriers, film production and animal shelters, among other end uses, across the country. Meanwhile, Chelsea Building Products (Oakmont, Pennsylvania) broke ground in April on its $25 million grassroot vinyl window and door components manufacturing plant in Sewickley Township, Pennsylvania.

Plastic is used to produce pipes used in transporting everything from water to chemicals to oil and gas, and Industrial Info is tracking a variety of related projects. Flexpipe Systems LLC (Calgary, Alberta) is in the process of renovating its Rockwall Fiberglass Composite Pipe Plant in Texas, which serves the company's U.S. customer base, to produce its Flexpipe line of piping used in oil and gas gathering, water disposal lines, carbon dioxide injection lines and other applications.
Westlake Pipe and Fittings (Houston, Texas) is at work expanding its polyvinyl chloride (PVC) pipes plant in Wichita Falls, Texas, which entails adding a 190,000-square-foot facility to produce the company's molecular-oriented PVC (PVCO) pipe used in municipal water systems. PVCO pipe offers some advantages over traditional PVC pipe, including increased strength and durability, and improved water flow capacity.
