Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). State-owned electric and water utility, Santee Cooper (Moncks Corner, South Carolina), continues the environmental trend, starting construction last summer on a $200 million wet flue gas desulfurization (FGD) scrubber project at the Winyah Power Station. For details on this project see related April 25, 2005 Construction Set to Begin on $225 Million Scrubber Project at South Carolina Coal Plant. The facility is located in Georgetown, South Carolina, and includes four 315-megawatt (MW) General Electric turbine/generator sets, with four coal Riley Stoker opposed-fired dry bottom boilers. Construction for the scrubber is being provided by A&D Constructors (Evansville, Indiana) on Units #1 and #2, with completion and tie-ins scheduled in the summer of 2007.
With existing scrubbers on Units #3 and #4, the $25 million upgrade will include modifications, new mixers, blowers, and pumps to be installed, in order to extend and improve performance. URS Corporation (Austin, Texas) is providing engineering services for this project, which is scheduled to begin construction during the spring of 2007, with a three-month construction time period.
Santee Cooper is also expanding its output capacity through the construction of two new 600-megawatt coal-fired units at the 1,146-megawatt Cross Generating Station (Pineville, South Carolina). Construction started in the spring of 2004 on Unit #3 and Unit #4 in the fall of 2005. Commercial operation on Unit #3 will be in the first quarter of 2007, and Unit #4 in mid-2009. The estimated $1.5 billion project is being constructed by engineering and construction firm, WorleyParsons (Reading, Pennsylvania).
Similar to other utilities across the nation, Santee Cooper is considering meeting future energy needs by turning to coal. In addition to the new units at Cross, a new $984 million, 600-megawatt pulverized coal plant is already under review. If studies prove that a new coal-fired plant would be a feasible alternative, construction could kick off as early as the fourth quarter of 2007. The location under study is on the great Pee Dee River, in Florence County, South Carolina.
