Researched by Industrial Info Resources China (Beijing, China)--Following preliminary approval from the National Energy Administration (NEA) in September 2012, SDIC Qinzhou Power Generation Company Limited (Qinzhou, Guangxi) kicked off the construction preparation for Qinzhou Power Plant's 2,000-megawatt (MW), Phase II expansion project on October 16, 2012, according to an announcement from State Development & Investment Corporation (SDIC) (Beijing) on October 19.
SDIC Qinzhou Power Plant is located in the Qinzhou Port Area of southwest China's Guangxi autonomous region. The power plant is jointly invested by SDIC Huajing Electric Power Company Limited (Beijing), the listed flagship of the SDIC in the power sector, and Guangxi Investment Group Company Limited (Nanning, Guangxi) in the proportion of 69:31, with a total planned capacity of 3,200 MW. The construction of two 600-MW, supercritical, coal-fired units in Phase I began in May 2005, and both units were put into operation in July and November 2007, respectively.
According to plans, the Phase II expansion project will be built with two 1,000-MW, ultra-supercritical, coal-fired units with a total investment of $1.2 billion. Upon completion, the project will effectively solve the regulation problem in Guangxi during the dry season and will improve the power source structure in the Guangxi grid. The project also will be a powerful support for the rapid economic development in the Beibu Gulf area of Guangxi.
Early in November 2011, the project owner had awarded the main turbine, generator and boiler equipment required for the project. Presently, the project owner is working closely with Guangdong Electric Power Design Institute, the project designer, for the purchase of remaining equipment and construction contractors. According to the schedule, the project will try to begin operations at the end of 2014. However, construction of the project is still subject to final approval from the National Development and Reform Commission.
