The plant, which is located on 100 acres in Dorchester County, has been in operation since 1983. Fluor Corporation (NYSE:FLR) (Irving, Texas) provided engineering, procurement and construction services for the $300 million project. Industrial Info has been tracking the project since early 2011. Construction began in early 2012.
The plant's graphite electrode capacity will be expanded from 45,000 tons to 75,000 tons per year. Showa Denko Carbon manufactures graphite electrodes for use in electric arc furnaces at steel mills. The company is hoping to take advantage of growth in the North American steel market.
Showa Denko also manufactures graphite electrodes at its plant in Omachi, Japan.
