Shuttered Alabama Biodiesel Plant to Go Up on Auction Block

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--A shuttered biodiesel production facility in Moundville, Alabama, will hit the auction block on October 3. The facility was formerly operated by privately held Green River Biodiesel Incorporated (Moundville).

Green River Biodiesel began production in 2005. Due to the rising costs of soybeans, the decreasing costs of fuel, and a poor economy, the company filed for bankruptcy in 2008 and ultimately shuttered the plant in February 2009. The nameplate capacity is expandable up to 100 million gallons per year, and there is 1 million gallons of storage capacity on-site. At the high point of operations, the facility had 35 employees. A few employees remain on the site to maintain the plant and grounds.

The plant sits on a 54-acre site on Cherokee Bend Drive in Moundville, which is about 16 miles south of Tuscaloosa, Alabama. The facility has on-site rail spurs, is situated along the Black Warrior River, and is near Interstate 20.

At this time, there are no plans for new biodiesel plants in Alabama. The state has only one operational biodiesel plant, which is in Creola, Alabama, and is operated by Southeastern Biodiesel Solutions Incorporated.
