Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The shuttered E3 Biofuels (Shawnee Mission, Kansas) fuel ethanol plant in Mead, Nebraska, will be acquired by Kansas-based AltEN LLC. The sale is expected to close by mid-November this year.
The $26 million plant had a novel approach to producing fuel ethanol. It would convert the manure from a feedlot of nearly 30,000 head of cattle into methane. The methane would provide energy to convert corn into fuel ethanol and distillers grains, which would be fed to the cattle. When the plant reopens, the new owner plans to keep this "closed-loop" method.
During initial testing and startup procedures in early 2007, an explosion blew up a boiler, which was not repaired. The facility never reached full production capacity. In November 2007, E3 Biofuels filed for bankruptcy. The plant has been idle since then.
The facility is located on County Road 10 in Saunders County, 36 miles west of Omaha. The plant was to produce 20 million gallons of fuel ethanol and had 41 employees.
