Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--General Mills Incorporated (NYSE:GIS) (Minneapolis, Minnesota) has begun excavation in preparation for the expansion of a food processing plant in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. General Mills is investing $100 million to expand yogurt production at the facility, which also manufactures breakfast foods. Dubbed "Project Queen," it is partly in response to double-digit rates of growth for yogurt products at grocery stores.
The company's plans call for the construction of a 112,000-square-foot building; additional milk storage capacity; the installation of processing and production equipment; and associated refrigeration systems. Major construction will begin in November, and the expansion is scheduled to be completed in the first quarter of 2012.
BE&K Building Group (Greenville, South Carolina) will be the design-build firm for the building, while Lyons Company Incorporated (Glasgow, Kentucky) is the primary mechanical contractor, Adams Electric (Reidsville, North Carolina) is the electrical contractor, and Van Sickle Allen & Associates (Plymouth, Minnesota) is responsible for design engineering.
Earlier this year, General Mills discontinued production of its children's yogurt beverage and Perfect Portions refrigerated biscuits product lines to make room for more profitable products.
