Solo Cup Company Hurries to Close Plant in Massachusetts

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Consumer packaging products manufacturer Solo Cup Company (Lake Forest, Illinois) is speeding up plans to close a manufacturing plant in North Andover, Massachusetts, that makes polystyrene cups and disposable dinnerware.

In June of last year, the company announced plans to close the plant in September 2011. In October 2010, the company moved up the closure date to March of this year. The plant will be closing down in phases. The company cited improving production efficiency across 10 other North American manufacturing plants.

Approximately 361 employees will lose their jobs when the company officially closes its doors in March.

The company also announced in June that the Springfield, Missouri, and Owing Mills, Maryland plants will be among the others to close. The Owing Mills plant manufactures plastic cutlery and paper and plastic cups. Operations from these plants will be transferred to faculties in Illinois, Georgia and Texas.

Solo Cup Company has facilities in the Americas and Europe. In 2009, the company consisted of approximately 6,800 employees.
