Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--South Carolina has seen an influx of industrial projects over the past few years, led particularly by the automotive sector as it builds new facilities for both battery and vehicle assembly. But the state's construction activity involves more than motor vehicles. Industrial Info is tracking more than $12.1 billion worth of projects underway in South Carolina covering a range of sectors, including data centers, steel and food.

BMW Group (Munich, Germany) is one of the key players in the state's automotive sector. The company is expanding an existing plant in Greer to manufacture electric vehicles (EVs) and also building a high-voltage battery assembly plant in Woodruff, about 20 miles from Greer. The expansion at the assembly plant includes an 850,000-square-foot building addition that will house new production equipment and supporting systems to pave the way for EV production. Construction is expected to be completed next summer. The battery assembly plant's completion is expected in early 2026. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Industrial Manufacturing Project Database can learn more by viewing the reports on the Greer EV plant and Woodruff battery plant.

Other South Carolina automotive projects include one from Volkswagen-ownedScout Motors (Tysons, Virginia), which is establishing a 16-building campus to manufacture its range of electric SUVs and trucks. For more on that project, see December 9, 2024, article - Gray Construction Involved in Some of U.S.' Largest Industrial Projects.

Other cutting-edge projects include a grassroot data center being built by Google Incorporated (Mountainview, California) in Ridgeville, about 35 miles northwest of Charleston. The 170,600-square-foot building will require 80 megawatts of power. General contractor Turner Construction Company (New York, New York) broke ground on the facility earlier this year and is expected to wrap up the project by the end of 2025. Subscribers can learn more by viewing the project report.

In Huger, U.S. steel behemoth Nucor Corporation (NYSE:NUE) (Charlotte, North Carolina) is at work on some additions and modernizations at its mill. The most significant of these additions is a galvanizing line. The 500,000-ton-per-year line will produce galvanized steel up to 72 inches wide, primarily for the automotive sector. But that's not all Nucor is doing at the plant. Other modernizations also are underway, including construction of a new air-separation unit to supply industrial gases for the mill's steelmaking operations. The galvanizing line is expected to begin operating in early 2026, and the other modernizations will be completed in 2027. The Food & Beverage Industry also plays a prominent role in the state's construction activity, and one of the leading projects in this sector caters to a food known for fast, budget-minded dining--ramen noodles. Nissin Foods Holdings (Tokyo, Japan), which produces such low-price staples as Top Ramen and Cup Noodles, last year selected a site in Piedmont, South Carolina, for a new plant. The renovations of the existing 641,000-square-foot building are underway and expected to be completed next summer. The plant joins other U.S. Nissin locations in California and Pennsylvania and is intended to increase the range of the company's premium products such Cup Noodles Stir Fry and Hot & Spicy Fire Wok. Not all of the state's food and beverage projects are on such a large scale. Knockout Butchery LLC (Pauline, South Carolina) processes small batches of cattle to provide premium quality, 100% grass-fed beef. The owners are constructing a grassroot processing facility in Roebuck, about 30 miles east of Greenville. When completed next year, the facility will begin processing up to 35 head of cattle per week, providing custom cuts and smoked products. Subscribers can learn more by viewing the project report.
