Southern California Edison Plans for Steam Generator Replacement at California Nuclear Power Plant

Located in San Diego County, the 3-unit nuclear facility is situated about 100 miles south of San Clemente.

Released Thursday, June 09, 2005

Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). Southern California Edison Company is developing plans to replace the aging steam generators on Unit #2 at the San Onofre Nuclear Power Station (San Clemente, California) in the spring of 2006, with completion in spring 2009. Unit #3 is scheduled to be done in 2010.

Located in San Diego County, the 3-unit nuclear facility is situated about 100 miles south of San Clemente. The plant consists of two identical 1,127-megawatt units (Units 2 & 3), with two General Electric steam turbine/generator sets, and two Combustion Engineering pressurized-water reactors. The units came online in 1983 and 1984. The 456-megawatt Unit #1, which saw commercial start up in 1968, was shut down in 1992.

Units 2 & 3 steam generators were built to last for forty years, but they are showing their age ahead of time. The steam generators have to be replaced to keep the reactors running. They produce steam that, in turn, spins the turbines to produce electricity. Replacing the steam generators would help lengthen the life of the plant, whose operating license expires in 2022. The two steam generators will be replaced with Japan's Mitsubishi Heavy Industries' (Tokyo, Japan) steam generators.

Pacific Gas & Electric Company's Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Station (Avila Beach, California) has a similar project being planned for its 2,301-megawatt plant, scheduled for 2008.

The San Onofre Nuclear Power Station is owned and operated by majority owner, Southern California Edison (75.05%), San Diego Gas & Electric (20%), City of Anaheim (3.16%), and the City of Riverside (1.79%).
