Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). HC Energia (Oviedo, Spain), one of Spains larger utility companies and a subsidiary of Portugals Energias de Portural-EDP, has started construction on a $290 million, 400-megawatt (MW) unit addition at one of its existing power plants located in the city of Castejon in Spains Navarra Province. This unit addition is phase II of the planned projects for the site. HC Energia awarded the turnkey engineering, procurement & construction (E+P+C) contract to Alstom Power SA (Madrid, Spain), along with a seven-year operational-supervision & maintenance (O&M) service contract for the project.
Construction of phase II began in June of this year, and is scheduled to be commissioned by fourth quarter 2007. This unit addition will be the second such unit, which Alstom has installed at this site after commissioning phase I in 2003. Phase II, like phase I, will be an identical unit consisting of Alstoms highly-regarded and efficient GT26 gas turbine that runs at an efficiency rate of just above 57% and was developed specifically for combined cycle applications of this type. Alstom will also supply the associated steam turbine and electrical generators plus one of the industrys best environmental emissions control technology. The unit will also consist of Alstoms state-of-the-art EGATROL-GT controls and will be designed to handle diesel (#2 oil) as a backup fuel.
The electricity produced will help serve the energy requirements for Spains Navarra state plus help to alleviate Spains high-dependency on energy imports. IIR will continue to monitor this project as it goes through its various stages of construction and development.
