Researched by Industrial Info India (Delhi, India)--The Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) recently hosted the Indian Steel Tube Summit for 2011. Industry experts and decision makers, including Secretary of Steel P.K. Mishra, were present. The government of India expects total steel production at the end of 2011 to be 93 million tons. Currently, India is a net importer of steel, but the government expects the country of be a net exporter within next three years.
"The government is considering changes in the regulatory mechanism and Mines and Minerals Development Act to speed up the process for clearances for the upcoming steel projects," Mishra said. "The issue will be looked at by a special body constituted under the Finance Minister of India. The new land acquisition act is expected to be passed in the winter session of parliament."
The Indian steel tube industry is a niche industry but is growing. The Indian pipeline market currently produces 4.6 million tons of pipe per year and makes up approximately 8% of the total steel market in India; it is expected to grow to 10% in the next three years. The steel tubes are applied in a wide range of industries, such as oil and gas transportation, iron-ore slurry transportation, construction and automobiles. Transportation through steel pipelines is cheaper, faster, more efficient, and has lower maintenance costs. A major application exists in the gas pipeline industry, where 10,000 kilometers of gas pipelines are expected to be constructed in 2011-15.
Other areas where pipelines find application are boiler tubes, pipes, smoke tubes, boiler panels, bed tubes, superheaters, re-heaters, fired heaters and internal piping. A major share of this market will come from the Power Industry, where the government plans to add 78,000 MW by the end of 2012.
