Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Swiss energy company Raetia Energie AG (Poschiavo, Switzerland) is planning to construct a 1,000-megawatt (MW) pumped-storage hydropower station in the valley of Puschlav in Switzerland's Graubuenden canton. The power station will use Lago Bianco and Lago di Poschiavo as storage basins. A 10-mile pressure tunnel will provide water to the plant, which will be equipped with four 250-MW reversible hydraulic turbines. The company will invest $1.45 billion (980 million euros) in the power plant project.
The project is in the early stages. In 2010, Raetia Energie will apply for license and the popular vote of the neighbouring communities. In 2012, the company expects to call for tenders to start the power plant construction in January 2013. The construction will take about five years.
The Puschlav facility is the second hydro project in Switzerland on this scale. Swiss energy company Nordostschweizerische Kraftwerke AG (NOK) (Baden), a subsidiary of Axpo Holding AG (Zurich, Switzerland), recently announced the plans to construct the 1,000-MW pumped-storage hydropower station near Linthal, located in the Glarus canton in the eastern part of Switzerland.
