Tharaldson Ethanol Continues Producing through Dryer Upgrade in North Dakota

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Privately held Tharaldson Ethanol LLC (Casselton, North Dakota) continues to produce fuel ethanol while distiller's grains quad-dryer is rebuilt.

The 120 million-gallon-per-year plant has been producing at only half-capacity and has been sending out wet distiller's grains to market. The plant originally started in January 2009. When the dryer project is completed, the plant is expected to produce 100 million gallons per year of fuel ethanol, as well as dried distiller's grains from 36 million bushels of corn processed annually.

Turnkey contractor ICM Incorporated (Colwich, Kansas) has been working in 7-degree temperatures and under winter storm advisories to get the project completed by the February 1. The energy center retrofit started in November of last year, and a project of this magnitude usually takes 10 months to complete. Much of the equipment has been delivered to the site, and the quad-dryer with a dual-RTO system is expected to be operational by the first week of February.

All steel fabrication has been completed; utilities, steam and natural gas connections have been made; the motor-control center has been extended; and syrup system to the new dryers has been rerouted.

Cost estimates for the energy center retrofit are in the $5 million range.
