Indonesia's top coal producers, who hold long-standing mining contracts (Perjanjian Karya Pengusahaan Pertambangan Batubara, or PKP2B) with the government, are raising concerns following the revocation of a mining contract extension, according to news media reports.
One of the PKP2B holders, PT Tanito Harum, recently closed a 34,543.8-hectare mining site in Kalimantan after losing its mining permit extension.
The situation is a source of concern for other top miners, whose contracts would expire from 2021 through 2025. These include PT Kendilo Coal Indonesia, PT Kaltim Prima Coal, PT Multi Harapan Utama, PT Arutmin Indonesia, PT Adaro Indonesia, PT Kideco Jaya Agung and PT Berau Coal.
Indonesia's Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) maintains it is working to provide the best regulation of the nation's private and public mining enterprises.
