Toronto Builds 550 Megawatts of New Base Load Generation to Replace Existing Coal Generation

Portlands Energy Centre, LP, a joint venture of province-owned Ontario Power Generation (Toronto, Ontario) and EPCOR Power, LP, has started preliminary site work on the 550-megawatt (MW) Portlands Energy Centre, near the retired Richard L Hearn Power Station. The installation of this plant will help offset the coal generation that has been mandated to be removed from service by 2009 in an effort to help reduce air emissions in the province.

Portlands Energy Centre is being constructed under an engineering, procurement and construction contract with SNC-Lavalin Power Ontario, a division of SNC-Lavalin Group (OTC:SNC) (Montreal, Quebec). The plant’s design is a natural gas-fired in a two-on-one combined-cycle configuration. The equipment for the power island consists of an Alstom steam turbine/generators power with two GE combustion turbine/generator (CT) sets (MS 7001FA), each with an Alstom heat recovery steam generator (HRSG). The cooling system will be a once-through system from Lake Ontario. The plant will have all the best available technologies installed to reduce air emissions. The Portlands Energy Centre is targeted to be online by the summer of 2008.
