Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Torq Transloading Incorporated (Calgary, Alberta), an independent, fee-for-service transload operator in Canada, is wrapping up an expansion of its crude-to-rail terminal located in Unity, Saskatchewan, near the hot oil sands play in Alberta.
Moving crude to west coast refineries is becoming a challenge, as pipeline projects are getting delayed and unit trains are becoming the best way to move crude out of the area.
Currently, the crude transloader ships up to 40 rail cars of crude along the Canadian National Railway. With the new rail infrastructure, the project will provide the company and its crude-by-rail clients with dual access to both Canadian National and Canadian Pacific's rail networks. The expansion will accommodate segregated crude storage and multiple additional tracks.
A new four-lane loading rack will allow for the shipment of unit trains of up to 120 cars. The Unity terminal is the seventh crude-by-rail terminal, and it cost about $100 million to get into service.
The unit train cars will be capable of handling the heavy oil and bitumen, which is too viscous to move by pipeline, by including heated railcars. This method will reduce the costs associated with adding condensate to the crude. The project is expected wrap up and go into service within the next 60 days.
