Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--France-based energy major Total SA (NYSE:TOT) (Paris) and 174 Power Global (Irvine, California) have announced that they are forming a joint venture to develop 12 utility-scale U.S. battery energy storage system (BESS) and solar power projects in the U.S. The projects will have a combined capacity of 1.6 gigawatts (GW) and will be transferred from 174 Power Global's development pipeline. Industrial Info is tracking $2.62 billion in U.S. renewable energy projects by both companies.
"This transaction is a first significant step for Total in the U.S. utility-scale solar market, in line with our 2025 ambition to achieve 35 GW of renewables production capacity worldwide. I am confident that this will pave the way to more opportunities in the U.S. renewables and storage market," said Julien Pouget, director of renewables for Total, in a press release.
Among the 174 Power Global projects being tracked by Industrial Info are BESS and solar projects near Waipahu, Hawaii. Such projects include the Kupenhau solar and BESS facility, each of which will have a generating capacity of 60 MW. Construction could begin later this year, for completion in the summer of 2022. For more information, see Industrial Info's project reports on the solar and BESS facilities.
174 Power Global also is developing several solar projects in Arizona, although Industrial Info has classified many of these of having a low probability (less than 70%) chance of moving forward. Among the Arizona projects is the Atlas project in La Paz County, west of Phoenix. Built on more than 1,600 acres, the solar farm would use approximately 700,000 solar panels to generate 300 MW. An associated BESS facility also would have a capacity of 300 MW. Construction could kick off next year, with an estimated completion time of about a year. For more information, see Industrial Info's project reports on the Atlas solar farm and BESS facility.
Other 174 Power Global solar projects in Arizona include the massive, 800-MW Orion project, which has several components and comes in at price tag of more than $1.4 billion. Click here for a list of related projects.
174 Power Global is a U.S. subsidiary of South Korea's Hanwha Group (Seoul), which manufactures solar cells through its Hanwha Q Cells affiliate. Among the company's renewable energy projects that are under construction in the U.S. is the Rippey solar photovoltaic plant near Gainesville, Texas, about 70 miles north of Dallas and Fort Worth. Construction on the 78-MW facility began last summer and is expected to wrap up by the end of this quarter. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
