Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--TransAlta Renewables, a subsidiary of TransAlta Corporation (NYSE:TAC) (Calgary, Alberta), is chalking up stronger revenues and higher output, following the addition of two major facilities, amid optimism around wind and solar projects in development across the U.S. and Canada. Industrial Info is tracking more than US$3.6 billion worth of active projects from TransAlta, nearly all of which are for wind, solar or hydro power-generation projects.

Higher wind resources in Canada and the acquisition of 122 megawatts (MW) of operational solar facilities across North Carolina drove revenues to US$139 million, a 51% increase from the second quarter of 2021. The company also saw the commissioning of the Windrise Power Project in Magrath, Alberta, which completed construction in 2021. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Power Project Database can read more in a detailed plant profile.
Lower income from subsidiaries, higher asset impairments, and higher interest and depreciation costs associated with the commissioning and financing of Windrise took second-quarter net earnings down to US$13 million, from US$25 million in the same period last year.
Many of TransAlta's biggest investments are found in fossil fuel-rich places such as Texas, Oklahoma and Alberta. In central Oklahoma, home of the Anadarko Basin, TransAlta has notched up significant progress on two major wind-energy projects: the 301-MW White Rock Windfarm in Anadarko, 65 miles southwest of Oklahoma City, and the 200-MW Horizon Hill Windfarm in Crescent, 40 miles north of Oklahoma City. The Sooner State is known for its windy plains, which have proven ideal for wind-energy developers.
In December, TransAlta signed two long-term power purchase agreements (PPA) with a pair of unnamed customers for all of the energy generated at the White Rock facility, and ordered 51 wind turbine systems from Vestas Wind Systems A/S (Aarhus, Denmark). In April, Meta Platforms Incorporated (NASDAQ:META) (Cambridge, Massachusetts), the parent company of Facebook, signed a PPA for all power generated from Horizon Hill. Subscribers can read detailed reports on the White Rock and Horizon Hill projects.
In southernmost Texas, TransAlta is co-developing the Accalia Point Solar project near Combes with Westbridge Energy Corporation (Vancouver, British Columbia). The proposed project would generate 200 MW from photovoltaic (PV) panels and would be built alongside a 100-MW battery energy-storage system (BESS). The project remains in its early design phase, where plenty of factors can change or delay expected investment. Subscribers can read detailed reports on the solar farm and BESS.
In Alberta, TransAlta began construction in October on the US$195 million Garden Plain Windfarm near Hanna, in the Exshaw Formation, which lies west of Canada's portion of the Williston Basin. The facility is expected to generate 130 MW from 26 Gamesa turbines from Siemens AG (Munich, Germany). The project is expected to wrap up toward the end of the year. Subscribers can learn more from Industrial Info's project report.
About 70 miles south of the Garden Plain Windfarm, TransAlta is seeking permits for the Sunnynook Solar Energy facility, which would generate 236 MW from PV panels. It would be supported onsite by a 100-MW BESS unit. Subscribers can read detailed reports on the solar farm and BESS.
Just west of Calgary and bordering Banff National Park, the company is seeking permits for a BESS unit addition at the Ghost Hydro Station in Cochrane, Alberta, on the Bow River. TransAlta filed an application earlier this year with the Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC) to develop the 100-MW Phase I and the 80-MW Phase II; if built as planned, it would be one of the largest storage facilities of its kind in Alberta. Subscribers can read detailed reports on Phase I and Phase II.
At its existing operations in Canada, TransAlta amended and extended its PPA with New Brunswick Power Corporation (Fredericton, New Brunswick) for TransAlta's Kent Hills Windfarm in Riverview, New Brunswick, for an additional 10-year period to December 2045. TransAlta also extended its contracts with three industrial customers at its Sarnia Regional Cogeneration Plant in Sarina, Ontario, from the end of 2022 to at least April 30, 2031. Subscribers can read detailed profiles for the Kent Hills windfarm and Sarnia plant.
