Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Two coal-fired units at the Crystal River Energy Complex in Crystal River, Florida, were taken offline after a transformer caught fire on January 15. The plant is owned by Progress Energy Incorporated (NYSE:PGN) (Raleigh, North Carolina).
The units were operating at full load when the transformer blew. Plant officials stated that they are still investigating the cause and that they have begun their analysis. Both units were severely damaged, but Unit 1incurred the most damage. Plant officials said that they plan to begin pulling Unit 2's turbine this week, although they are uncertain when the process would begin with Unit 1.
Officials stated that it is unclear whether the damage will allow repairs to Unit 1 and there is no scheduled day for the units to return online, although the units may not return online for six to eight months, perhaps longer.
