Researched by Industrial Info Resources Australia (Perth, Australia)--TransGrid (Sydney, New South Wales), the owner and operator of high-voltage transmission lines in New South Wales, Australia, has selected UGL Engineering Pty Limited (North Sydney) as the major contractor for the the132/66-kilovolt (kV) Cooma Substation Rebuild Project. Cooma Substation supplies electricity to the Alpine region and the southern coast of New South Wales.
TransGrid and UGL signed the contract for the $15.2 million project on March 21. UGL will refurbish and rehabilitate the 60-year-old substation, which is nearing the end of its service life. The project includes the installation of two new transformers and interface points to connect the incoming and outgoing power lines.
According to TransGrid's project manager, Michael Rowe, the project will begin by the fourth quarter of 2014 and will take nearly two years to complete.
In addition to the Cooma project, TransGrid has awarded another major contract to Consolidated Power Projects Australia Pty Limited (Sydney) for the 132/66-kV Tamworth Substation replacement project, in the Tamworth region of New South Wales.
The $20 million Tamworth substation rehabilitation project will replace the 53-year-old substation with two new transformers. Project construction will begin in approximately six months and will finish in 2016. UGL and CPP are in the process of finalizing the construction subcontracts.
The network that supplies electricity to New South Wales was built during the 1950s and 1960s. TransGrid is working to ensure the reliable electricity supply to the state through a series of refurbishments and rehabilitations of the old substations and transmission lines, which are nearing the end of their service lives.
