Turbine-Generator Supply Contract Awarded for Shandong Haiyang Nuclear Power Project

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The signing ceremony for the turbine-generator supply contract for Phase I of the Shandong Haiyang nuclear power project were held in Beijing on January 31, 2008. This is another important milestone for the project following the approval of the authorization to participate at the end of 2007.

The contract was signed by Harbin Power Equipment Company Limited (HPEC) (Heilongjiang), Mitsubishi Heavy Industry (MHI) and Shandong Nuclear Power Company Limited (Shandong), a subsidiary of China Power Investment Corporation (Beijing).

So far, both support projects for the localization of the third generation of nuclear power technology, Zhejiang Sanmen and Shandong Haiyang nuclear power project, have selected the HPEC-MHI consortium as the supplier for the power island.

The project is scheduled to start construction during the 11th five-year plan (2006-10) upon the state government's approval. The site, in northern China's Shandong Province, has excellent geological conditions. The project, in Liugezhuang Town, Haiyang City, is the first nuclear power project in Shandong province. The project has a total planned capacity of six 1,000-megawatt (MW) nuclear power units with space reserved for expansion. As a support project for the localization of third generation of nuclear power unit in China, the project will have two 1,000-MW AP-1000 nuclear power units.

Excavation is expected to begin for the nuclear power island in the first half of 2008 with construction to follow in September 2009. The first unit is scheduled to begin commercial operation in 2014.
