Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Blanding's turtles could prevent the construction of Gilead Power Corporation's (Durham, Ontario) 22-megawatt (MW) Ostrander Point Wind Energy Park on Crown Land at Ostrander Point, Ontario.
The proposed $55 million wind facility is to be situated in Picton, Prince Edward County, Ontario. Gilead Power planned to construct nine wind turbine generators at the site in the spring of 2014, but construction is currently delayed until the fall of 2014. It may be delayed further, depending on the outcome of the decision by Ontario's Ministry of the Environment.
According to the Ontario Superior Court, site development activities will pose a great threat to an endangered species of turtle that nests on the project site's access roads and is vulnerable to being run over by motorists. Gilead Power is appealing the decision in court, claiming that the tribunal exceeded its jurisdiction and that there is no evidence of how many turtles actually live on the project site.
Blanding's turtles feature a bright yellow throat and pointed facial features. In Canada, they primarily live in Nova Scotia and the Great Lakes areas of Ontario and Quebec. In the U.S., they can be found in Nebraska, Ohio, Michigan and Missouri.
