Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Natural gas is booming again in Canada, with projects such as Shell plc's LNG Canada opening the door to new opportunities for the fossil fuel. Accordingly, pipeline developers are racing to link Canada's shale plays to key facilities for processing. Industrial Info is tracking about US$1.5 billion worth of natural gas pipeline projects across Canada that are slated to begin construction in the third quarter, more than 70% of which is attributed to projects in British Columbia.

Fortis Incorporated (St. Johns, Newfoundland) leads all other developers in its spending on third-quarter gas pipeline project starts, including more than half of the total investment in British Columbia. Several are related to Fortis' Eagle Mountain-Woodfibre Project, which involves building a new line between Squamish, which is a few miles east of the Woodfibre LNG Liquefaction Plant, and Coquitlam, which is just east of Vancouver. The roughly 30-mile, US$200 million pipeline is designed to carry 150 million to 200 million standard cubic feet per day of natural gas initially.

Fortis is supporting the new line with a $60 million compressor station in Squamish and a $60 million compressor station in Coquitlam. The Woodfibre LNG plant started construction in October 2024 and is expected to be completed in third-quarter 2027; the Eagle Mountain-Woodfibre components are set to wrap up in third-quarter 2026. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Oil & Gas Pipeline Project Database can read detailed reports on the new line, Woodfibre LNG, Squamish station and Coquitlam station.

Other major developers in British Columbia include Brookfield Infrastructure Partners LP (Toronto, Ontario), which is preparing to begin work on a 215-mile, US$250 million natural gas liquids (NGL) pipeline as part of its NEBC Connector Project, a multi-phase effort designed to connect British Columbia's share of the Montney Shale to downstream markets. A US$250 million condensate pipeline of the same length is to be built along the same route, from Brookfield's Highway Liquids Hub in Wonowan, British Columbia, to Gordondale, Alberta.

The Canada Energy Regulator granted federal approval for the NEBC Connector Project toward the end of 2023. British Columbia and Alberta both approved the project in the first quarter of this year. Subscribers can read detailed project reports on the NGL and condensate pipelines.

TC Energy Corporation (Calgary, Alberta) is supporting the massive Cedar Floating LNG (FLNG) Export Terminal--developed by joint venture partners Pembina Pipeline Corporation (Calgary) and indigenous group Haisla Nation--with the $65 million Mount Bracey Natural Gas Compressor Station in Prince George, British Columbia, which is part of the Coastal GasLink Pipeline fueling Cedar FLNG. Subscribers can read detailed project reports on Cedar FLNG and the Mount Bracey station.

Pembina and its partners announced a final investment decision (FID) on the Cedar LNG project about one year ago, and it presently is expected to be completed in late 2028. For more information, see May 13, 2025, article - Momentum Increases for North American LNG.

Outside of British Columbia, one of the highest-valued gas pipeline kickoffs in the coming months is SaskEnergy Corporation Limited's (Regina, Saskatchewan) 49-mile, US$105 million lateral pipeline from Prud'homme to near Lanigan, connecting the Saskatoon Compressor Station and a meter station, respectively.

As the second phase of subsidiary TransGas Limited's Aspen Supply Project, it will carry up to 100 million standard cubic feet per day to supply SaskPower's US$1 billion Aspen Power Station in Lanigan, which is expected to be completed in mid-2027. Subscribers can read detailed reports on the lateral pipeline and the Aspen Power Station.
