Written by Martin Lynch, European News Editor for Industrial Info (Galway, Ireland)--The last of 35 turbines has been installed, and power is being generated at the latest U.K. offshore windfarm, Westermost Rough.

Located eight kilometers (km) off the east coast of northern England, the operation is notable for being the first offshore windfarm to use 6-megawatt (MW) turbines, the largest commercial turbine in use today. Costing 1 billion euros ($1.13 billion), the windfarm spans 35 square km and will be fully commissioned later this summer, with a total generating capacity of 210 MW, enough to power about 150,000 homes.

Westermost Rough is owned by a joint venture group comprising Danish energy firm DONG Energy (Fredericia, Denmark) (50%), Marubeni Corporation (Tokyo, Japan) (25%) and the U.K. Green Investment Bank (Edinburgh, Scotland) (25%).

"Westermost Rough is ramping up and on course for full operation this summer, with the biggest commercial operating offshore wind turbines in the world," Benj Sykes, Dong Energy's country manager for offshore wind, told the Grimsby Telegraph. "We have got all 35 up now, and we have the last few going through the final tests before we can say we are fully commissioned and operational this summer."

Industrial Info reported on Westermost Rough producing its first power last September. For additional information, see September 22, 2014, article - First Power From Westermost Rough Offshore Windfarm.

The windfarm uses SWT-6.0-154 turbines from German engineering giant Siemens AG (NYSE:SI) (Munich, Germany), which have a rotor diameter of 154 meters, with blades measuring 75 meters.

Sykes said: "These are the biggest turbines to be seen anywhere in the world, and the first time it has been deployed on a commercial environment--a world first for industry. It is a modest sized windfarm, but critically important because we are deploying new turbines. They are direct-drive turbines which don't have a gear box. There is a fundamental difference in how they work, how they are maintained, and how they are constructed."

The 6-MW turbine will be eclipsed at another Dong offshore project in the U.K., where Siemens' new 7-MW turbine will be used for the 330-MW second phase of the Walney Extension offshore wind project, located 19 kilometers (km) off the English west coast in the Irish Sea.
