Units 3 and 4 of Tianwan Nuclear Power Station Receive Preliminary Approval

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Following the preliminary approval of China National Nuclear Corporation's (CNNC) (Beijing) Xudabao Nuclear Power Project in the Liaoning province, Phase II (units 3 and 4) of CNNC's Tianwan Nuclear Power Station recently received preliminary approval from the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC). This project soon will be ready to kick off pre-stage preparations.

Tianwan Nuclear Power Station, located at Tianwan Town, Liangyuangang City, in the Jiangsu province, currently has two 1,060-megawatt (MW) AES-91 reactors (units 1 and 2) from Russia in operation, and another two Chinese reactors (units 5 and 6) under construction. According to the planning, the plant will have a total of eight units with an installed capacity of more than 8,000 MW. Jiangsu Nuclear Power Company Limited (JNPC) (Lianyungang, Jiangsu), a company jointly invested by CNNC (40%), China Power Investment Nuclear Power Company Limited (Beijing) (30%) and Jiangsu Guoxin Assets Management Corporation Limited (Nanjing, China) (20%), is responsible for the construction and operation of the power station.

Early in November 2007, China and Russia reached an agreement for the Phase II Expansion of Tianwan Nuclear Power Station. On March 23, 2010, China and Russia officially signed the framework cooperation contract for the expansion project for units 3 and 4. On September 27, China Nuclear Power Engineering Company Limited (CNPEC) (Shanghai), China Nuclear Energy Industry Corporation (CNEIC) (Beijing) and Russia's AtomStroyExport (ASE) (Moscow, Russia) signed the engineering contract for the Phase II expansion of Tianwan Nuclear Power Station. On November 23, JNPC signed the general contract for units 3 and 4 of Tianwan Nuclear Power Station with ASE in St. Petersburg, while Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin observed.

Units 3 and 4 each will be 1,000-MW units based on Russia's VVER pressurized reactor. According to the schedule, the first buckets of concrete for units 3 and 4 will be placed in December 2012 and August 2013, respectively.
