University of Georgia Goes Green with Construction of $44 million LEED- Silver Pharmacy Building

Reported by Annette Kreuger, Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The University of Georgia (Athens, Georgia) has completed construction of the $44 million Pharmacy South addition, the first building on campus designed to Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver standards. The certification is the national benchmark for design, construction and operation of high-performance green buildings.

In planning that dates back to 2004 (as reported in Industrial Info's Pharmaceutical-Biotech Tracker - Online Database), the project's architect was the S/L/A/M Collaborative (Atlanta, Georgia). The 95,000-square-foot building's design met the stringent LEED environmental standards by including such features as biodiesel generators and having the laboratories' fume hood control system integrated into the building's heating and air conditioning system. In addition to the two high-tech research laboratories, Pharmacy South is host to sterile products rooms, large teaching auditoriums, two full pharmacies, technology-rich classrooms, and a conference room.

The Whiting-Turner Contracting Company (Atlanta, Georgia), the project construction manager, began construction on Pharmacy South in 2007. The new building is located adjacent to the existing Robert C. Wilson Pharmacy building and is now open for new and returning students for the current 2009-10 school year.
