Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). A team of experts has gathered in Mobile, Alabama, to design and build a $40 million Cancer Research Institute. A ceremonial groundbreaking was held last week for the project, which is expected to begin construction later this year. The University of South Alabama (USA) has chosen a site adjacent to the USA Knollwood Hospital for the building, which they hope will help curb the Gulf Coast Region's cancer death rates, which are among the highest in the nation.
USA will staff the new institute with over 50 physicians, scientists, and support personnel. The school hopes the National Cancer Institute will ultimately name the site a comprehensive cancer center. The ceremony last week included a tribute to Alabama Governor Bob Riley's late daughter, who died from cancer, and acknowledgement of U.S. Senator Richard Shelby, R-Tuscaloosa, who has obtained tens of millions of federal dollars to the institute. The project is scheduled to be complete in 2006.
