Written by Richard Finlayson, Senior International Editor for Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The construction of new uranium mines and continuing exploration in Namibia has expanded prospects for the country's uranium market. The two towns at the center of this solid growth are Swakopmund and Walvis Bay, on the South Atlantic coast. Electrical power demand has increased from industrial and domestic users, driven by housing for workers and industrial processing.
The company Energo Red, in a joint project with state power utility Nampower, is upgrading the power infrastructure of Walvis Bay in a $50 million project. The power supply will be upgraded again by 2016 with another $50 million investment.
Erongo Red is looking for expressions of interest from financial companies to fund the upgrade of the Swakopmund infrastructure. Energo plans to invest $10 million outside the two towns to connect rural areas to the national grid.
Energo Red was established in 2005, and its shareholders are the municipalities of Swakopmund, Walvis Bay, Henties Bay, Omaruru, Usakos, Karibib, Arandis, the Erongo regional council and Nampower.
