U.S. Mid-Atlantic Re-energizes with More than $12.5 Billion in Second-Quarter 2016 Project Kickoffs
The U.S. Mid-Atlantic region is returning to health, with $12.57 billion worth of projects set to begin construction in second-quarter 2016, the region's highest total for any quarter in almost two years.
The Mid-Atlantic region includes Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia.
The Industrial Manufacturing Industry is out in front with $4.1 billion in projects set to begin construction from April through June, more than half of which is attributed to the Maryland Department of Transportation's $2.37 billion expansion of the Purple Line light rail system near Baltimore. The 16-mile addition, which runs from Bethesda to New Carrolton, has been in the preliminary engineering phase for almost a year; like many commuter rail projects across the country, it has faced lengthy delays while awaiting government funding. Jacobs Engineering Group Incorporated (NYSE:JEC) (Pasadena, California) is serving as consultant. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
The Power Industry is in a solid second place with $3.77 billion in projected kickoffs for the second quarter, one of the largest being Quantum Energy Partners' (Houston, Texas) $615 million energy center in Moundsville, West Virginia. The 549-megawatt (MW), natural gas-fired, combined-cycle (NGCC) power plant would run on a 2-on-1 configuration, utilizing two 196-MW General Electric (NYSE:GE) combustion turbine generators, with duct-fired heat-recovery steam generators, and a 133,MW GE steam turbine generator. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
The Pulp, Paper & Wood Industry is looking at $2.26 billion worth of construction starts in the second quarter, almost all of which is attributed to Shandong Tranlin Paper Group Company Limited's $2 billion pulp and paper mill in Chesterfield, Virginia. The new mill, which will produce "tree free" paper products from agricultural field waste, is still in the preliminary design phase. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
The seven other highest-value projects set to begin construction from April through June are:
- $1.2 billion: Panda Power Funds' Mattawoman Generating Station in Brandywine, Maryland
For more information, see Industrial Info's project report. - $650 million: Duke Energy Corporation's Asheville Power Station in Arden, North Carolina
For more information, see Industrial Info's project report. - $350 million: Montgomery County Department of Economic Development's White Oak Biotech Mixed-Use Site in Silver Spring, Maryland
