Reacting to market conditions, such as waning automotive demand, United States Steel Corporation (U.S. Steel) will temporarily idle three blast furnaces, two in the U.S. and one in Slovakia.
Blast Furnace B at the Great Lakes Works plant in Michigan is scheduled for a relining and upgrade in July, but will not be restarted after work is completed in September, as had been originally planned. A second blast furnace will be idled at the Gary Works plant in Indiana. The third furnace to be idled will be Furnace 2 at U.S. Steel Kosice in Slovakia.
Together, the furnace idlings will remove between 2.4 million and 2.7 million tons per year of steel-making capacity.
